Clarkston's Teen Summer Reading Presentation 2006

In July of 2006 I was invited down to Clarkston Michigan for my second year in a row to do a presentation of fancy rats as pets and how to care for them. They have a summer reading program that the students really love. The head of this program is Tracy Malek. She is the Young Adult Services Librarian at the Independence Township Library in Clarkston, Michigan.

This years theme was Creature Feature. Each week the participants learned about different animals and wildlife from presenters, from all over the state. I was honored to be one of the presenters choosen to help educate the students about what wonderful companion animals fancy pet rats are.

The students enjoyed cuddling and loving the soft furry fancy rats displayed for the event and several of the students left the event with new pets they had adopted.

Below are pictures from this event. To find out more information about what is happening in the pictures, just pass your mouse pointer over the picture.

A Display of Educational Materials

Many people shy away from pet rats because they don't like their tails. Kathryn allows each participant to touch the soft warm tail of a pet rat to overcome their fears of it.

A young male rattie tries to give Kathryn a kiss, while others enjoy investigating Kathryn's shoulder.

After the presentation the students were given time to play with real pet fancy rats.
